Mayo woman Sinead Diver seals Olympics place with seventh place London Marathon finish

Irish-born Sinead Diver has earned a spot at the Tokyo Olympics next Summer with a seventh place finish in the London Marathon.

Diver, who competes for Australia, cut over a minute off her personal best, finishing the race with a time of 2:24.11.

The 42-year-old Mayo woman, who led the race at the halfway point, said: "That was real good fun.

"I wasn't expecting to lead, obviously, and I even made a joke about that yesterday. I was really freaked out and didn't want to look behind, I didn't know where everybody was!

"[Qualification for Tokyo] was the main goal for today. Marathon running in Australia is very strong at the moment but hopefully I have done enough to get there."

Her impressive display makes her the third-fastest Australian marathon runner ever after moving to the country in 2002 and taking up running just nine years ago.

She will now represent her adopted nation in Tokyo next year, after deciding to compete for them in 2015.
