Ger Cafferkey has become the latest Mayo footballer to announce his retirement.
The long-serving full-back has informed manager James Horan of his decision to quit inter-county football following on from Andy Moran’s announcement last month.
Cafferkey made his Championship debut under John O’Mahony against New York in 2009 but enjoyed his best days during Horan’s first stint in the job when he won four of his six Connacht titles and was named as an All Star in 2012.
He made his 100th appearance for the county last year but his game time has been limited in recent seasons.
The Ballina Stephenites man missed the 2016 Championship and the following year’s League owing to a career-threatening hamstring injury and endured further hamstring problems this year.
The League defeat to Dublin at Croke Park on February 23 proved to be his last appearance for the county having been named man of the match against Cavan in his previous outing.
