Mayo primary school reports Covid-19 case as urgent letter sent to parents

A primary school in Co Mayo has confirmed a positive case of coronavirus.

An urgent letter sent by the school, seen by the Irish Mirror, explains that the parents of any children deemed to be close contacts have been contacted by the HSE.

Any other pupils that aren't considered close contacts are not required to take a test.

But if any children at the school develop coronavirus-like symptoms they are asked to contact their GP as soon as possible.

Mayo has largely escaped the worst of the pandemic, and this is the first school in the county to report a positive case of Covid-19.

Meanwhile HSE Chief Clinical Officer Dr Colm Henry confirmed at the Department of Health briefing last night that in total 54 schools here have reported a confirmed case since reopening.

However he stressed that this was expected, and it is only a very small percentage of the thousands of schools in the country, most of which are currently operating without issue.
