Mayo nursing home sees sixth coronavirus death after group of residents test positive

A sixth person died from Covid-19 at a nursing home in the west after a spate of residents contracted the deadly bug last month.

The local woman's death was confirmed on Thursday.

The outbreak at the Tí Aire home outside Belmullet, Co Mayo started early in April and weeks later there had been five tragic deaths.

Another resident in the north Mayo facility was being treated in hospital after she tested positive for the disease.

A Ti Are Nursing Home spokesman said: "Sadly a female resident passed away on the last weekend in April.

"At the time everyone at Ti Aire extended their sincere condolences to the resident’s family and friends on their sad loss."

Local San Fein TD Rose Conway-Walsh said: "People in Mayo are really concerned about the high number of individuals testing positive.

"They deserve transparency and honesty.  Could more have been done to prevent people getting infected and dying?

"It would be difficult to understand if patients were transferred to nursing homes without first being tested or if infection was spread because staff didn’t have proper PPE.

"It’s so sad and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the bereaved.  Their pain is compounded by the restrictions on visiting and funeral arrangements.

"They are comforted by the professionalism and profound kindness of staff to their loved ones."
