Mayo mountain climber, 60s, tragically dies while climbing Mweelrea peak

A man tragically died on Wednesday while climbing a mountain in Co Mayo.

The man, in his 60s, died suddenly while on Mweelrea peak in west Mayo during the afternoon.

Gardai confirmed the death had taken place after the alarm was raised by a fellow climber, according to reports.

The deceased was taken to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar where a post-mortem is due to take place.

Investigating gardai say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

A spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: "A sudden death was reported to local Gardaí at approximately 3:40pm on Wednesday the 4th September 2019 at Mweelrea Mountain, Louisburgh, Co. Mayo.

"A report will now be submitted to the local Coroner as per the Coroners act."
