Mayo hurler Cathal Freeman raises over €60,000 for HSE and Irish Cancer Society with garden hurling marathon

Mayo hurler Cathal Freeman raised €60,243 with his garden hurling marathon in aid of the HSE and Irish Cancer Society.

The Tooreen clubman and former Mayo footballer originally said on Twitter that he would undertake the challenge provided he got more than 2,000 retweets.

He stood by his word and completed the gruelling 42km marathon last month - running while soloing a sliotar on his hurl.

Freeman received massive support for the idea and set up a GoFundMe page for donations.

The 29-year-old tweeted an update today revealing that 62,666 has been raised, with 2,422 subtracted in VAT and fees.

Speaking at the time of the challenge, Freeman explained to The Mayo News that he was mindful that the Irish Cancer Society had missed out on their annual Daffodil Day fundraiser.

Freeman said: “Unfortunately the Irish Cancer Society missed out on their Daffodil Day towards the end of March.

"That is something that affects myself and pretty much everyone else, because the Irish Cancer Society does amazing work.

“The second part of the fundraising drive is to raise money for the HSE to provide PPE (personal protective equipment) for the huge amount of healthcare workers who are being affected by the coronavirus while doing amazing work.”
