Mayo GAA Secretary hits out at 'torrent of abuse' aimed at players after All-Ireland loss

Mayo GAA Secretary, Dermot Butler has hit out at “the torrent of abuse” aimed at Mayo players in the aftermath of the county’s All-Ireland final defeat by Tyrone, claiming it was “nothing short of scandalous.”

Butler – speaking in his annual report to the Mayo Convention – went on to slam the “cowards” who attack County Board officers.

Later in his report, Butler takes issue with John Small’s “terrible tackle” in the All-Ireland semi-final, which left Eoghan McLaughlin nursing a fractured jaw, questioning how it wasn’t a red card. “If ever there was an argument for VAR to be introduced into the GAA then this was it.

“Players should be protected from this type of behaviour.” Speaking about the abuse aimed at players and management Butler said:

“There is no justification for the abuse. There were other people calling for James Horan’s head. “God, will we ever learn in this county?

“We went through 2021 retaining our Connacht title, gained promotion and qualified for an All-Ireland Final but still some aren’t satisfied.”
