Mayo GAA in mourning following death of former chairman Paddy Muldoon

Mayo GAA is in mourning following the death of former county chairman Paddy Muldoon.

The Aughagower man was an active member of the Mayo County Board and also their current patron.

Having been heavily involved with the GAA scene in the county, he held the roles of Chairperson, Central Council Delegate, Insurance Officer, Co-Founder of the Green & Red Trust and Team Selector and Chairperson of the Minor Board.

He became chairman of Westport GAA in the mid-sixties and went on to hold the position for nine years.

In 1980 he was elected chairman of the Mayo county board and Mayo won two Connacht senior titles, an All-Ireland U21 title and a minor title during his 8-year term.

He managed Westport GAA to a county junior championship and also held a role as the club's President. They led the tributes in a statement following his passing.

It read: "Westport GAA cannot emphasise the debt of gratitude to Paddy and the Muldoon family for all that he has done for the club, to say that he has helped more than a few people along the way would not be an understatement."

Many further Mayo clubs paid tribute to Muldoon, with Castlebar Mitchels commenting that he represented 'everything that is good about the GAA'.
