Mayo GAA club shuts down after player reports Covid-19 symptoms during warm-up

A Mayo GAA club has shut down after a player reported Covid-19 symptoms during a warm-up.

Moy Davitts GAA club was due to play Garrymore in a Michael Walsh Senior League clash on Sunday afternoon.

But the game had to be cancelled just moments before throw-in when a Moy Davitts player reported coronavirus symptoms.

However it has been confirmed that the player has since tested negative

A Garrymore club spokesman said: "Today’s Michael Walsh game V Bohola Moy Davitts GAA was called off as a precautionary measure as a player from Moy Davitts reported a symptom of COVID-19 during their warmup prior to the game.

"We would like to thank Moy Davitts for their responsible actions in line with the protocols and the protection of all players and officials.

"The South Mayo Junior Championship game V Mayo Gaels GAA has also been called off as a precautionary measure."

Moy Davitts, based just outside the village of Foxford, have also suspended all club activities as a result of the incident.

The club wrote on Facebook: "All club activities are suspended as a precautionary measure until further notice. Hopefully, the situation will be clarified in the next day or two. Thank you for your cooperation."

A spokesman added that the player involved has since tested negative for the virus.

While the South Mayo GAA board added: "A player from a visiting club arrived in Garrymore this morning to play in a MW League game.

"This player showed one of the symptoms of Covid and as a precaution the game was called off. The player has no temperature and will be tested in line with protocols in place. Activity in this club will be suspended for 48hours."

Current GAA guidelines advise that any individuals who display symptoms of the killer bug should avoid all further activities until a test can be arranged, if required.

Players can return to play 48 hours after a negative test, assuming they are displaying no symptoms.

However if the test is positive, the club must undergo significant contact tracing in conjunction with public health officials.

Any close contacts will be tested and undergo follow-up checks, while casual contacts will be advised about their risk and encouraged to contact their GP if symptoms develop.
