Mayo chief counting on more Government funding for county boards to facilitate 2021 championship

Mayo chairman Liam Moffatt is hoping the government recognises the value brought to the country as a whole by the staging of inter-county competitions last year with more funding in 2021.

"From a GAA viewpoint it is very challenging and worrying," Moffatt said.

"Society as a whole benefited from being able to see Gaelic Games on the telly last year.

"It was supported by the Government and I'd be hopeful that some sort of support would be made available to assist county boards to facilitate that again, but I'll leave that to Croke Park, it's their remit to discuss.

"But I'd be hopeful that some sort of support comes through to help county boards run county teams to get that product out there that clearly helped so many people last year by watching the games."

Mayo have just announced Portwest as a long-term sponsor and are hoping to have a new Operations manager in place within a month.

Moffatt is also hopeful that work on Elverys MacHale Park will continue.

"The intention would be to put in a new pitch in MacHale Park, and we hope that begins pending we have the money for it and you have to factor in the uncertainty around Covid," he told Midwest Radio.
