Mayo boss James Horan is sweating over Aidan O’Shea after his captain suffered a knee injury at training last night.
In what was Mayo’s first collective session since restrictions were lifted this week, O’Shea picked up the injury “innocuously”, reported the Mayo News, during a training game and subsequently walked off the field.
The Breaffy man is due to undergo a scan later this week when the full extent of the damage will be revealed but, in the meantime, there are bound to be fears that the 30-year-old could be forced to sit out the season.
Mayo are in Division Two North of the Allianz League, which gets underway on the weekend of May 15/16, where they are joined by Meath, Down and Westmeath.
They have been paired with Sligo in the Connacht quarter-final, which is likely to be played on the weekend of June June 26/27, which is in just under 10 weeks’ time.
O’Shea, who captained Mayo to last year’s Connacht title, hasn’t missed a Championship game for the county since 2012.
Mayo have endured misfortune with knee injuries in the recent past with Jason Doherty and Colm Boyle both sidelined for the majority of the 2020 season after apparent cruciate ligament damage in both cases.
