Mayo 1-21 New York 0-04: Green and Red earn convincing win in the Big Apple

Mayo smashed New York by over 20 points today as their fans took over the city.

The Green and Red traveled to the Big Apple at the weekend and there was no jetlag evident as they trounced the US team 1-21 to 0-04 at Gaelic Park in the Bronx.

They were dominant from throw-in and the game was as good as sealed up by just 15 minutes into the first half.

A convincing first half performance from the travelling side saw them add just seven points to their tally after the break.

It was a one-sided match, but one that Mayo will take with them into the next round.

And fans took over Times Square as the green and red army sung and came together to show their love for their county.

Spirits were high as over 2,000 Mayo men and women descended on the middle of Manhattan, where there were jubilant scenes.

Galway 0-16 London 1-09: Tribesmen escape with a win from Ruislip

The gathering occurred after a social media appeal by former goalkeeper John Madden who starred for the team in the mid-90s

Marty Morrissey and a RTE cameraman were among the masses as thousands of supporters sang a rousing rendition of The Saw Doctors’ The Green And Red Of Mayo.

Meanwhile, soccer hero Kevin Kilbane and Mayo GAA legends Willie Joe Padden and David Brady were among those to speak at a special event at Rosie O’Grady’s pub.

More than 7,000 people from Mayo are estimated to have made the trip Stateside ahead of the Yew County’s opening match yesterday.

But the capacity of Gaelic Park where the match against New York took place only has a capacity of 4,500, so it is likely that many supporters did not get into the ground to see the action.
