Mayfair fire: 40 firefighters tackle huge blaze next to Saudi Embassy in central London

More than 40 firefighters were tackling a large blaze next to the Saudi Arabian embassy in central London.

Huge flames could be seen leaping up the side of a building just metres from the embassy in the heart of Mayfair on Friday morning.

Six fire engines were deployed to the scene on Chesterfield Road after the fire brigade was called at around 9.15.

The fire began in the ground floor restaurant, spreading up the extraction system to the third floor.

A fire brigade spokesperson said: "Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters have been called to a fire at a restaurant with flats above in Curzon Street in Mayfair.

"The restaurants extraction system from ground to third floor is alight.

"The Brigade’s 999 control officers have taken 15 calls to the fire.

"The Brigade was called at 0917. Fire crews from Soho, Lambeth, Chelsea and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene."

The fire broke out just after 9am

The fire was brought under control just before 11am and the cause is now under investigation.
