Maybole striker Mick McCann rolls back the years with four goals in Ashfield thriller

Carlo Walker claims four goal saviour Mick McCann is an inspiration – and he never wants a break.

The 40-year-old striker fired Maybole to an incredible 5-5 draw against Ashfield after the home team looked home and dry with a three goal lead.

Ladywell chief Walker reckons the former Glenafton striker’s performance was beyond top drawer and a lesson to his youngsters.

He said: “We hadn’t conceded a goal in two games and then we go and lose five in one, that’s football for you.

“Mick turned 40 this year but he is light on his feet and really fit and nimble. His all round game is very good and he can pass on so much to others.

“It was sweltering hot but Mick wouldn’t have wanted to come off so I played him for the 90 minutes.

“It’s an incredible feat for anyone to score four goals in a game, never mind a 40-year-old.

"Thanks to Mick we grabbed a draw from the jaws of embarrassment and I am sure he has more goals to come.”

McCann opened the scoring and Lewis Kirkwood added a great free-kick but Ashfield looked to have sealed victory when they went 5-2 ahead.

But they reckoned without golden oldie McCann who scored three in a row to steal a sensational draw.

‘Bole, who entertain Glasgow Utd on Saturday, could even have won it in a frantic finish when Euan Smith sent a good chance wide.
