Maybole RaceRunner Kayleigh Haggo bags her second world record within a fortnight

Ayrshire RaceRunning sensation Kayleigh Haggo is celebrating her second new world record in a fortnight.

The Maybole marvel moved a giant step up in distance as she negotiated a 5000m event at the National Championships.

Haggo, 22, was recently savouring a new world record in the RR2 200m event at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena in Kilmarnock.

During that event she crossed the finishing line in a lifetime best time of 37.25 seconds.

But yesterday in Kilmarnock, Kayleigh kept her cool in the blistering heat and posted 20 mins 8.94 secs for the 5000m – which is now expected to be rubber-stamped as another world record – subject to ratification.

Delighted Kayleigh said it was a team effort with coach John Owens and fellow racing star Kyle Brotherton supporting her.

She said: "We did it! A 5000m world record. When I say we, it was 1000 per cent a team effort!

"I honestly can’t thank Kyle enough for setting the pace and encouraging me all the way."

Frame Running Scotland said on Facebook: "Kayleigh Haggo set a new RR2 5000m world record (subject to ratification) at the Scottish Athletics 5000m Open Championships in Kilmarnock with a blistering time of 20:08.94.

"Big well done Kayleigh, you keep getting faster and faster!"

And a spokesperson for Scottish Athletics said: "She's at it again!

"What a performance in the punishing heat of Kilmarnock as she moved up to 5000m in RaceRunning and duly posted a new world record (subject to ratification).

"Kayleigh clocked 20:08.94 with Kyle Brotherton offering support in the track and coach John Owens from the sidelines. Many congratulations to Kayleigh!"

It's been a cracking summer so far for golden girl Kayleigh.

In June she added a European Gold medal to her collection after winning the Women’s RR3 100m final at the European Para Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Again, Kayleigh was in brilliant form, crossing the finishing line in 18.11 secs – a lifetime best for the distance and a new world record time.
