'Maybe the club has to try and help': Steve Bruce on Newcastle's lowest crowd in nine years

Steve Bruce has pledged to help supporters that are finding it difficult to attend matches over the festive period.

United played out their 2-1 win against Southampton in front of their lowest crowd for nine years.

When asked about the crowd, Bruce said: “I know there were a few numbers here which were down, and maybe the club has to try to help at this particular time.

“Can they help the supporters at this difficult time when Christmas is coming?

“It’s difficult for people to afford to come to the matches, so maybe there’s something we can do as a club to try to get the numbers up.

“We need St James’ Park full again.”

Newcastle are now in the top 10 of the Premier League but Bruce hopes to have the crowd back up to capacity for the next home game against Crystal Palace.

He said: “We’ve still got to get better. It’s given us a nice platform to move forward, and that’s vitally important. We’ve still got a long way to go, but we’re going along nicely at the minute.

“The spirit amongst everybody is terrific.

“Hopefully, we’ll get a full St James’ Park for the next game, that would be great.”
