‘Maybe say hi back’: Single man complains about female hikers who don’t acknowledge him. And just like that, the internet’s newest main character was born

Sound the alarms—the internet’s concerned about a new entitled man online.

It started when Justin (@justinbarberfit), a content creator on TikTok, took to the platform to complain about women not talking to him in a video that’s gotten over 816,000 views.

“ Public service announcement,” the man said. “If you’re gonna pass a single guy on a trail and you’re a girl and he says hi, maybe say hi back and not just gimme an awkward [look].”

Many viewers questioned how women were supposed to detect Justin’s single status from his greeting. Others simply pointed out how gross his entitlement to women’s time, energy, and attention was. Justin quickly got flamed in the comments section of his video, leading to some outraged video responses.

“Justin, you could have just written this in your diary later,” said one commenter.

Another added, “Justin is why they choose the bear,” referencing the man vs bear debate that ignited the internet in 2024.

Since Justin posted on Nov.17, TikTok content creators jumped on the bandwagon of making fun of Justin’s somewhat pretentious post.

Why is what Justin said so laughable?

To many, Justin’s comments felt incredibly out of touch considering how unsafe women feel in 2025. Unfortunately, there are countless stories where women entertain a simple greeting from a man, only to get harassed and borderline stalked on simple outings.

For instance, two women walking on Lady Bird Lake Trail noticed a man following them along their route. They made simple small talk at first, but became more and more restless as he continued “showing up” wherever they went.

In that regard, Justin’s rhetoric is potentially dangerous for women. They don’t owe him, or others, a conversation just because they chose to go out. The idea that they do oftentimes leads to escalated, violent situations.

Justin’s comments also assume a romantic connection where there isn’t one. His out-of-touch line about “pass[ing] a single guy” points toward his desire to strike up a deeper conversation and flirt—not engage in common courtesy. He isn’t asking for a hi because it’s a nice thing to do. He’s asking for a “hi” to get more out of a woman who is probably completely uninterested. Most women don’t go on hiking trails to find single men. They go to enjoy a relaxing day outdoors.

A trend gets born

The current trend is in, and it’s responding to—or making fun of—Justin.

TikTok users like James Cappola expressed frustration and borderline outrage at Justin’s entitlement. “Oh forgive them captain [expletive]… [These women hikers] didn’t know they were in the presence of royalty… They don’t owe you [expletive].”

Others mocked Justin’s tone, like @most.smartest, who directly quoted the original video and added some scathing additions.

So far, tens of content creators have responded to Justin’s video. Some responses directly examine why they’d choose “the bear” over Justin, while others point out how Justin continuing to keep his TikTok video up normalizes bad behavior and general entitlement.
