Maya Jama says dating ex Stormzy was 'normal' and they weren't like a celeb couple

Maya Jama said she never felt like she was in a celebrity couple when dating grime artist Stormzy.

They called it a day last summer and ended their four-year romance.

A source close to the pair suggested Maya, 27, moved out of their London home after growing increasingly tired of the rapper's "party lifestyle".

Now the Radio 1 DJ and TV presenter has been speaking about their time together.

Making an appearance on the latest episode of Shopping with Keith Lemon, she said they were just normal people and living under the spotlight wasn't the reason for saying goodbye.

"I didn't ever feel like a celebrity couple," she told Keith, real name Leigh Francis.

"Everyone else made it like that. We just had a normal relationship - and then everyone was just talking about it!"

Maya insisted it never felt as if they had been thrown together by fame.

She added: "We met when we were like 20 and that was before anyone cared about us. So then it was just a normal relationship.

"It was like a normal relationship but people wanted to look at it more and talk about it more."

Stormzy told the Sunday Mirror in February 2018 he planned to marry Maya.

He said: "I'm still so young but I want to propose, it's going to happen and I will do it right. She is so sick, she is the best."

But they parted ways 15 months ago.

A source close to the DJ told The Sun at the time of the split: "The decision isn't one she has come to lightly, but ultimately the relationship has come to an end.

"She wants to focus on her TV and radio career for now."
