Maya Jama pays tribute to her granddad who was one of Bristol's 'first Somali families'

TV star Maya Jama has paid tribute to her granddad who was in 'one of Bristol's first Somali families'.

The former BBC Radio One presenter announced his death to her 508,000 Twitter followers today (Tuesday, July 7).

During a short post, the DJ revealed she was spending the day looking at old pictures, but did not say if his death was linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

She tweeted: "RIP Granddad, gained an angel. Looking at old photos today and he was such a G.

"My nan (ayeeyo) is also my twin when she was younger."

The Bristol presenter had previously posted on her Instagram account: "Real g's immigrated from Somalia and built a life for themselves, started working, started a family, bought a house.

"Pretty sure they were one of the first Somali families in Bristol."

Last month, Maya spoke out about her first love being shot dead while in Bristol almost 10 years ago.

During a candid interview with the Guardian, the celebrity also talked about what is was like to have a dad in prison while she was growing up.

Maya said the death of Rico Gordon in 2011 made her more determined to get the most out of her life.

The 25-year-old was on the phone to Rico, 21, when he was killed during a shooting between two gangs.

Several bystanders were injured during the shocking event on July 3 outside of the Black Swan pub, in Easton.
