LONDON _ President-elect Donald Trump and U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May committed to continuing the "very special" relationship between their two countries on Thursday, in their first phone call since the Republican's election victory.
Trump told May that the U.K. is a "very, very special place for me and for our country" in the phone call at 1:45 p.m. London time, May's office said in an e-mailed statement. Trump recalled the close nature of the relationship between former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and ex-President Ronald Reagan, according to May's office.
"The prime minister and President-elect Trump agreed that the U.S.-U.K. relationship was very important and very special, and that building on this would be a priority for them both," the statement said. "President-elect Trump set out his close and personal connections with, and warmth for, the U.K. He said he was confident that the special relationship would go from strength to strength."
"The call ended with President-elect Trump inviting the prime minister to visit him as soon as possible," May's office said.
