May Bank Holiday weather: Hail predicted in parts of country with Saturday 'the best day'

The May Bank holiday weekend will be best on Saturday before it deteriorates leading to hail in some parts of the country.

A mixture of sunshine and showers will settle on the country throughout Saturday with temperatures cooling on Sunday before heading into rain by the evening.

The east of England is even likely to see some hail and thunder over the break, the Met Office told The Independent.

But the arctic front which came down the UK over the past week will ease off into milder, slightly wetter weather overall, said a spokesperson.

"It's really getting a lot milder than it has been. Saturday will be the best day of the bank holiday with the most sunshine across most of the country," she said.

"Monday is not going to be the greatest day and a bit unpleasant."

Temperatures would be lowest in the north west of the country at around nine or 10 degrees, while slightly warmer in the south at between 11 and possibly even 15 degrees.

But usually-dry East Anglia could see some hail.

"There will possibly be some hail and thunder in the east," said the Met Office spokesperson.

Yellow weather warnings for snow in high ground in parts of nothern England and southern Scotland would be lifted by the weekend - although these areas would still remain cloudier and windier than the rest of the country.

Arctic weather has seen the temperatures fall across the UK in the last week.

An Atlantic front has been moving the current low pressure front away and brought with it the milder and slightly wetter weather, the Met Office said.
