May Bank Holiday day off for Nottinghamshire schoolchildren moved to a Friday

Children in Nottinghamshire will get a day off to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of Second World War in Europe.

Last month, the Government decided to move next year's early May bank holiday from Monday, May 4 to Friday, May 8.

Today, the Conservative-led Nottinghamshire County Council also agreed to move the Bank Holiday date for all children in its schools.

Nottingham City Council schools will also give children the same day off.

May Day is traditionally marked on a Monday, but has been put back a few days, for one year only.

VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks the day at the end of the Second World War when fighting against Nazi Germany came to an end in Europe.

When the change was announced in June, the Government’s Business Secretary Greg Clark said: "It will ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to remember and honour our heroes of the Second World War and reflect on the sacrifices of a generation."

It is not the first time the date has been changed. In 1995, it moved from May 1 to May 8 for the 50th anniversary of VE Day.
