Maxwell responds to ODI snub by taking one of the catches of the summer

Glenn Maxwell could have been forgiven for letting his head drop after he was overlooked from Australia's ODI squad to face England, but it looks like he's more determined than ever to prove selectors wrong.

His exploits with the bat for Victoria and the Melbourne Stars have been well publicised this summer, but some fans were left questioning Maxwell's fielding after a costly dropped catch against Adelaide a few days ago.

But against the Renegades on Friday night, he quashed those concerns for good.

Maxwell was standing at a regulation point position when Renegades batsman Tim Ludeman smoked a cut shot, seemingly over the infield and towards the fence.

Somehow, Maxwell flew directly upwards, parried the ball above his head, regained his composure and completed the catch as he fell back to the turf.

Like it or not, every move Maxwell makes at the moment is being scrutinised by fans and doubters alike, but taking what may be the catch of the tournament is certainly a good way to react to the pressure.

Stars break drought

Kevin Pietersen delivered a vintage performance with the bat and in the field to lead Stars to a 23-run win and their first victory of the Big Bash season.

Pietersen smashed five sixes on his way to 74 off 46 balls, combining with Peter Handscomb (41) for a 110-run partnership as the Stars posted 4-167.

He then wound back the clock with a brilliant diving catch at short extra cover to dismiss Tom Cooper as the Stars held their cross-town rivals to 9-144 from their 20 overs.

Maxwell proved an all-round gun in the field, taking four catches in total after an important 31 not out from 16 balls with the bat.

The 37-year-old Pietersen is set to retire later this year and has confirmed this will be his final BBL campaign.
