Maxine Peake has criticised Laurence Fox for his remarks about white privilege and for dismissing the suggestion that Meghan Markle has faced racial discrimination.
The actor is facing a backlash for describing “wokeists” as “racists” and for saying he often gets it “in the neck” for being a “posh boy actor” who is part of a famous acting dynasty, which includes his father James.
“Black & w/c actors can only speak the truth once they’re established – their voices aren’t heard before,” Peake wrote on Twitter in response to his remarks.
“Posh actors, on the other hand, only complain when they want attention.”
Peake added: “Anything s**t to sell @LozzaFox or is it just a coincidence you’ve gone right wing? Hope it’s worth it.”
Fox’s comments come after an appearance on Question Time in which he told academic Rachel Boyle: “It’s so easy to just throw your charge of racism at everybody and it’s starting to get boring now.”
When Boyle told him he is a “white privileged male”, Fox replied: “I can’t help what I am. I was born like this – it’s an immutable characteristic, so to call me a white privileged male is to be racist — you’re being racist.”
The Lewis actor has since been called a “disgrace” to the industry by members of the actors’ union.
