Max Strus inks two-year deal, opening door for Tacko Fall signing

Per The Athletic’s and Stadium’s Shams Charania, the Boston Celtics will sign rookie guard Max Strus — who has been under contract as a two-way player — to a partially guaranteed two-year deal.

The move will open a two-way spot for the Celtics, which could presumably be used for rookie sensation Tacko Fall. Fall, a 7-foot-5 center out of UCF, may already have the most fanfare of any player on Boston’s roster.

This likely factors into the Celtics’ decision-making regarding their approach to filling out the back end of their roster.

Rookie point guard Tremont Waters, who Boston selected with the 51st overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, is currently the Celtics’ only two-way player.

Fall, who tallied 10.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game at UCF (where he played four seasons) averaged 7.2 points (on 77.3% shooting from the field), 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game for in five games for Boston in Summer League.

He has averaged 2.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 block per game in the preseason, though playing just 6.9 minutes per game.

Meanwhile, Strus — another 23-year-old rookie, but one who fits the mold of a 3-and-D wing — hasn’t gotten enough attention perhaps, after averaging 9.8 points per game in the Summer League while shooting 45.0% from three in four games. However, he’s 0-of-3 from the field in the preseason.

Playing two seasons at DePaul University, Strus averaged 18.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game in his collegiate career, earning All-Big East honors in 2018-19.
