Max Stahl dead: Blue Peter host loses cancer battle at the age of 66

Max Stahl has died at the age of 66.

The TV star - famed for presenting on iconic children's show Blue Peter from 1978-80 - died on Wednesday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

The BBC report that the journalist - known as Christopher Wenner when he co-hosted the BBC children's programme - passed away in hospital in Brisbane, Australia.

Following the news of his passing, social media has been flooded with tributes.

One upset fan typed on Twitter: "Sad news. I have fond memories of his brief stint on Blue Peter, bridging the gap between John Noakes and Peter Duncan. I knew he’d been in Doctor Who too, but I had absolutely no idea that he went on to do such remarkable things thereafter. What a career."

Another added: "Sad to hear of the passing of legendary journalist & film maker Max Stahl who brought Timor Leste’s independence struggle to the world and filmed the 1991 Santa Cruz massacre of protesters by Indonesian forces. A luta continua."

A third joined in: "RIP Max Stahl. A hero of mine, a hero to many. A luta continua xx."

Max was an award-winning film-maker whose footage brought global attention to a massacre in East Timor.

He filmed the 1991 massacre of 271 protesters against Indonesian rule in East Timor.

After capturing the footage he buried the film in the graveyard, and it was later smuggled out and broadcast around the world.

Stahl told the BBC in 2016: "I was just getting my camera ready when there was a wall of sound, at least 10 seconds of uninterrupted gunfire. The soldiers who arrived fired point blank into a crowd of a couple of thousand young people."

He added: "I could easily see that it was only a matter of time before they came to me, and at that point I thought, well, I should move away from here."

Max's changed his name from Christopher when he moved behind the camera and took on his mum's maiden name of Stahl.

The star had an impressive career in front of and behind the camera - that spanned over 20 years.

He worked with television channels in England, France, Germany, Scandinavia, Australia, Canada and the United States of America.

Max also starred in an 1984 Doctor Who episode named The Awakening, although in the final cut, his role was reduced to that of a non-speaking character.

In 2000 he was honoured with awards at the New York Film Festival and from the UK Royal Television Society, and received the world's leading prize for independent camera journalism, the Rory Peck Award.
