Max Power named as Sunderland's new team captain, as Grant Leadbitter becomes club captain

Max Power will captain Sunderland this season, with the midfielder named as the Black Cats' new team skipper.

New signing Bailey Wright will take on the role of vice-captain, with Wearside-born academy graduate Grant Leadbitter becoming club captain.

Leadbitter became Sunderland captain last summer following the departure of George Honeyman to Hull City, but the 34-year-old started only 11 league games last season, partly due to an extended leave of absence he was given as he dealt with the after-effects of a family bereavement, which meant that Power regularly wore the armband.

And this season Phil Parkinson has decided to split the captaincy, giving the on-field role to Power full-time, with Leadbitter - who had previously captained his former club Middlesbrough - now becoming club captain.

"Grant has returned to the group for pre-season and has been a massive plus for us," said Parkinson.

"He has come back to the club in excellent condition and trained well, and he has also really helped the younger players within the group.

"He has the club at heart and is desperate to have an impact on the pitch, which I'm sure he will, and he will be an invaluable asset for us throughout the season.

"We are fortunate to have a squad of players with an abundance of leadership qualities, and Max and Bailey epitomise that.

"They both lead by example and like Grant, they will be key to establishing a culture within the dressing room that will drive the club forward throughout the season."

Centre-back Wright is now Power's deputy, and the Australia international takes on that role having been captain of his former club Bristol City.
