Max Meyer delivers honest assessment of his big chance in Crystal Palace's draw with Everton

Max Meyer admits he was not happy with one point after Crystal Palace's goalless draw at home against Everton yesterday (Saturday).

The German midfielder played the full 90 minutes as Palace started the new season at Selhurst Park against the Toffees, with the former Schalke man going close on a couple of occasions to breaking the deadlock in south London.

But while he saw his shot deflected over in the first half, he admitted that he could, and possibly should have done better when he was denied by Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the second half.

"[I am] Not [happy] with the one [point] because I think we deserved more because of the second half; we played really well and I think we deserved to win," he said, speaking after the game.

"I think I need to score from this position but it was a bit windy in this moment – that is not an excuse, I think I should score and I am sorry to the team."

Meyer's chance in the second half came just moments after Jordan Ayew had been denied by Pickford from a similar position, with the two opportunities the closest Palace came to making the breakthrough.

That was despite Everton being down to ten men in the closing stages of the game, after Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off after being shown a second yellow card on 76 minutes.

But Meyer said that it was not easy for Palace to break the ten men down, with Everton seeing out the game with little cause for alarm.

"We tried to score [and capitalise on the man advantage]," he said.

"But we were scared to get counter-attacked as Everton stayed deeper; it wasn't easy for us to create chances but we did our best and I hope we can win the next game."
