Max Holloway recalls first meeting with Conor McGregor ahead of potential rematch

Max Holloway has recalled the only in-person conversation he had with Conor McGregor before they fought in 2014.

McGregor made his second UFC appearance when he fought a 21-year-old Holloway seven years ago, winning by unanimous decision despite tearing his ACL in the fight.

The pair have gone back and forth on social media in recent weeks, with Holloway suggesting next March as a date for their second fight.

And Holloway - who fights Yair Rodriguez this Saturday - said he was surprised when McGregor had a sudden change in attitude before they faced off before their 2014 clash.

"When I fought him... It's a funny story. When I fought him, we were standing in line to go do our medicals... He was wearing these cool Hawaii shorts," he told ESPN.

"I was like 'Cool shorts, bro!' And he was like, 'Yeah, you like that, right? It's a Hawaii vibe,' and I was like, 'That's dope' and he was like 'Yeah, thank you!'

"And then when we went out there and we did the face-off, he kind of got into my face, and it kind of tricked me off.

"I was like, 'Oh wow, this guy can turn it on'. It is what it is," that's the only talk I've had with him, before our fight."

Holloway went on to win 12 consecutive fights after his loss to McGregor, knocking out former champions Anthony Pettis and Jose Aldo to win the 145-pound title.

McGregor also dominated the featherweight division, stopping the likes of Dustin Poirier and Chad Mendes before winning the undisputed title against Aldo.

In a now-deleted tweet, McGregor took a shot at Holloway on Twitter by calling him "light work".

Holloway mocked McGregor by stating he would walkout to a song by DJ Francesco Facchinetti, the Italian DJ that McGregor is alleged to have punched last month.

The Hawaiian refused to comment when asked if the UFC has approached him about a second fight with McGregor.

And he joked he will likely be going back and forth with his rival until the age of 60.

"A lot of people see me and Conor and chit chatting back. I don't say nothing to Conor that I wouldn't say to a training partner," he said.

"Conor don't say nothing to me that he wouldn't say to a training partner, we some competitive guys. I'll probably be going to Twitter ways with him until I'm 60.

"I got nothing respect for him, we understand what it takes to be here and compete at this level. Who doesn't like some banter?"
