Max Holloway offers to fight Conor McGregor in UFC rematch with no weight limit

Max Holloway has offered to rematch UFC rival Conor McGregor without a weight limit in place almost a decade on from their first fight.

McGregor won a lop-sided decision against Holloway when they fought at the start of their UFC careers in August 2013. Holloway was the only fighter to take McGregor to a decision during the Irishman's meteoric rise at featherweight, with 'Notorious' tearing his ACL during the second round of the fight.

Holloway has continued to fight at featherweight whilst McGregor has moved up to lightweight and even welterweight since their meeting. Having beaten most of the top contenders in his weight class, the idea of a rematch against McGregor is something that interests Holloway and the Hawaiian would take the fight at any weight.

“I would love to fight Conor,” Holloway said on The MMA Hour. “I was the only guy that took Conor to a decision at 145, and he’s big right now, we’ll see what happens. I know he wants to come back, and that would be a fight that is super interesting, super fun. There’s a lot of questions and a lot of unknowns, because we’re just two different fighters from when we fought back then.

“I think a lot of fans would love that fight, a lot of fans have been asking for that fight. We’ll see what happens, at the end of the day it’s not even a weight thing. I’d fight him open-weight, whatever the commission will tell us, just show up at the weight bro. You don’t have to worry, I’d just like to test him.”

Former two-weight champion McGregor is scheduled to make his UFC return against Michael Chandler later this year after recently completing filming against his rival for season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter. The Irishman will look for his first win in over three years against Chandler having been sat on the sidelines since his back-to-back defeats to Dustin Poirier in 2021.

Holloway suggested rematching McGregor with a ruleset that was used at the first UFC event back in 1999 where fighters would compete against each other at any weight. "Yeah, I’d fight him at welterweight, just show up,” Holloway added. I guess we got to be close to each other I guess because of all this commission stuff, we could take it to the UFC 1 rules and just show up and fight. Why not?"
