Max Ehmer's absence gives Paul Tisdale Bristol Rovers selection dilemma

Bristol Rovers hope to continue their rise up the League One table on Saturday, but they will have to do it without captain Max Ehmer.

The defender is ruled out for the visit of Charlton Athletic after picking up five yellow cards in league games this term.

German-born Ehmer, 28, has not missed a single minute of league action since arriving at the Mem from Gillingham in the summer, and Gas boss Paul Tisdale knows he has a significant void to fill.

"It is significant because we’ve had a settled back four and he’s done particularly well," Tisdale admitted.

"He scored in the past game and our back four’s functioned well.

"In terms of (who will wear) the armband, I don’t know. I haven’t discussed it with my colleagues yet.

"In terms of who’s going to play in his place, we’ve got Mark (Little), we’ve got Josh (Hare). They both bring different elements to the team and this will be a significant part of my meeting with my colleagues.

"We haven’t named the side yet. They both bring very different elements."

Ehmer's absence leaves Little and Hare competing for the spot on the right of the Rovers defence.

The pair possess very different strengths. Little, arguably, offers superior defensive acumen and physicality, while Hare's crossing ability is rare in League One.

With strikers Brandon Hanlan and Jonah Ayunga set to start, Hare's delivery from wide areas could be a potent attacking force, but the manager has had the propensity to select the most experienced option when faced with a selection dilemma of this kind in his two months in charge.

That perhaps gives Little's chances a boost, but Hare – who has had few chances under Tisdale – certainly is a credible option to hurt a leaky Charlton defence.
