Max Allegri is favourite to replace Mikel Arteta at Arsenal as odds are slashed

Former Juventus manager Max Allegri is the bookies’ favourite to become the next Arsenal boss if Mikel Arteta is sacked by the Gunners.

Pressure is mounting on Arteta following Arsenal’s disappointing 2-1 home defeat by Wolves on Sunday evening.

Arsenal have now won just one of their last six Premier League games and sit 14th in the league table on 13 points, which is their lowest points tally after their opening 10 matches of any league campaign since they had 12 points at the same stage in the 1981/82 season.

The Gunners were eighth in the Premier League when they sacked Unai Emery on November 29, 2019 and just over a year later they appear to have gone backwards, with similar issues plaguing Arteta’s side.

Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was poor once again, touching the ball just 23 times despite playing down the middle and now has just four goals in 12 games this season.

Following the game Betfair slashed the odds on Arteta becoming the next Premier League manager to leave his post from 50/1 to 10/1, highlighting the pressure on the Spaniard, who is in his first managerial role.

The 38-year-old brushed off questions over his future after the match, but he will need to inspire improvement when the Gunners face London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

“My only concern is to get the best out of the players, give the best possible service to the club and become better and better,” Arteta said, as reported by football.london. “I know in this profession one day I will get the sack or I will leave, but I don’t know when that’s gonna happen.”

If the Arsenal hierarchy do pull the trigger on Arteta, then Betfair make Allegri, who left Juve last year after securing five successive Serie A titles, the most likely replacement at 17/10.

The bookmaker has Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel next at 10/3, with former star players Patrick Vieira (5/1) and Thierry Henry (6/1) also in the picture.

Here are all the latest odds from Betfair.
