Max Aarons explains why he's staying at Norwich City despite Tottenham Hotspur interest

Norwich City right-back Max Aarons has signed a five-year deal to stay at Carrow Road.

He had been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur last season ahead of the departure of Kieran Trippier.

The England international completed his move to Atletico Madrid on the same day that the Hammersmith-born defender agreed a new contract with the Canaries.

Spurs had been expected to move for the 19-year-old had talks broken down.

Last season, the teenager scored two goals and set up six assists as Norwich won the Championship.

Aarons was named Young Player of the Season by the English Football League and saw himself named in the Championship team of the season.

Speaking to his club's official website on his new deal, the right-back explained why he was staying at Norwich despite interest from the Champions League finalists.

"The club has shown a lot of faith in me since I first joined the first-team setup," said Aarons, who only made his debut in August 2018.

"For them to reward me with a new deal is brilliant.

"The progress has been massive and gone really quickly. To think I was sat signing my first professional deal this time last year and being here now, it’s brilliant.

"Like I've said many times, I had goals but I didn’t foresee them being anything like how it was last season."

Aarons paid tribute to his manager Daniel Farke for showing faith in his talent and hinted that his gratitude to the former Borussia Dortmund coach played a big part in his decision.

"I was very nervous but I thought I was ready and I believed in myself," he added. "I backed myself in that game and I knew I needed to grab my chance with both hands. I like to think that I did that.

"Credit to the boss for giving me the opportunity to play every week. It has given me a lot to learn in a tough league, the Championship is a hard league with a lot of games.

"It's made me stronger. I've come on a lot as a player – when I watch my first game back at Ipswich to now, my game has developed a lot."

Hearing a young player hail the influence of a manager committed to developing talent will only hearten Tottenham fans who are sure to be keeping an eye on Aarons this season as one for the future.
