Mavs' Nowitzki makes 2-year deal official

It took a few extra weeks, but superstar Dirk Nowitzki officially signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks, the team announced Wednesday evening.

He agreed to a two-year, $40 million deal in June. However, the team reportedly added another $10 million to the deal last week after the core of next season's team was signed.

The Mavericks also signed free agent guard Keith Hornsby and free agent forward Jameel Warney.

Nowitzki (7-0, 245), the most decorated Dallas Maverick in franchise history, is a 13-time NBA All-Star, earned All-NBA Team honors 12 consecutive years (2000-12), was named Most Valuable Player of the 2006-07 season and was MVP of the 2011 NBA Finals.

Last season, Nowitzki became just the sixth player in NBA history to register 29,000 career points and passed Shaquille O'Neal for sixth place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

The Wurzburg, Germany native was the ninth overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft and was originally acquired through a draft day trade with the Milwaukee Bucks.

He re-signed with the Mavericks on Oct. 22, 2001, signed a contract extension on Sept. 26, 2006, re-signed on July 9, 2010 and re-signed again on July 15, 2014.

Hornsby (6-4, 210) went undrafted last month after a 1,000-point collegiate career at the University of North Carolina-Asheville and Louisiana State University.

Warney (6-8, 260) played in all six games for the Mavericks at the Samsung NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. He averaged 6.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.0 block in 16.5 minutes per contest. He led Dallas in field goal percentage, shooting .593 from the floor while making .875 from the foul line.
