Mavropanos handed shock start, Martinelli replaces Lacazette: Arsenal lineups vs Man United

Mikel Arteta faces another tough challenge in his second home game as head coach of Arsenal.

After kicking off his reign with a draw away at Bournemouth, the fixture list threw up two home matches - against Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Gunners were on course for victory over the Blues on Sunday until a late collapse sent them to a 2-1 defeat.

And now they will have to pick themselves up against a Man United side who have thrived against the bigger teams already this season.

Arteta has a number of big decisions to make in his starting lineup. We asked out Arsenal writers and fans to have their say on what they would do if they were in charge.

Premier League match preview: Arsenal v Manchester United

James Benge - Senior Arsenal writer

Konstantinos Mavropanos may not have been the most impressive youngster for Arsenal in recent years but given the choice between him and Shkodran Mustafi I wouldn’t for a second dream of picking the World Cup winner.

It is long since past the point where Mustafi is worth persevering with and until Rob Holding is fit again it’s best to try someone with some potential upside rather than a centre-back who has consistently proven himself to be unreliable.

Further forward Reiss Nelson has done nothing to merit being dropped; he’s entitled to a starting role just as Gabriel Martinelli is if he is fit.

Alexandre Lacazette was better than he was perhaps given credit for against Chelsea and there’s an argument to give him time to play through his slump in form.

However, Martinelli’s energy and discipline in defence would be a valuable weapon in snuffing out Manchester United’s counters and giving Aaron Wan-Bissaka a sleepless night.

Benge's team: Leno; Maitland-Niles, Mavropanos, Luiz, Saka; Torreira, Guendouzi; Nelson, Ozil, Martinelli; Aubameyang.

Art de Roche - Arsenal writer

Following the performance against Chelsea, there isn't much room for change in the Arsenal starting XI.

In defence, injuries to Calum Chambers and Sokratis may force Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz to partner each other yet again. The pair played well against Chelsea but their old habits cost the Gunners which will be a worry against United.

Lucas Torreira seems to be returning to his old self but with Granit Xhaka seemingly on the verge of joining Hertha Berlin, him not starting again won't be a surprise. Matteo Guendouzi will start alongside the Uruguayan but will need to be more disciplined out of possession than he was against Chelsea.

Although many fans may be crying out to see Nicolas Pepe, Mikel Arteta really seems to favour Reiss Nelson. The youngster was a key component to Arsenal's pressing and was a threat down the right where he whipped in a few dangerous crosses. Arteta may see Leeds as a chance to lift the spirits of Pepe with a start.

De Roche's team: Leno; Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Luiz, Saka; Torreira, Guendouzi; Nelson, Ozil, Aubameyang, Lacazette.

Mikel Arteta will have been encouraged by what he saw from his Arsenal team for 45 minutes on Sunday, but the challenge is to replicate that for an entire game.

The Gunners head coach will be tempted to stick with a similar side for the visit of Manchester United, although Calum Chambers is likely to miss out after his injury against Chelsea.

Much depends on the fitness of Gabriel Martinelli. If the Brazilian forward is fit, Arteta has the option to shift Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang into his favoured central role and play Martinelli, Reiss Nelson and Mesut Ozil in support.

Nicolas Pepe looks set to be left on the bench again, while Lucas Torreira will surely start after his excellent display against Chelsea. Granit Xhaka missed the game at the weekend due to illness, but with his impending move to Hertha Berlin, Arteta may choose to leave him out anyway.

Ha's team: Leno; Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Luiz, Saka; Torreira, Guendouzi; Nelson, Ozil, Martinelli; Aubameyang.
