The Mavericks have requested waivers on Deron Williams after attempts to trade him before Thursday's deadline failed.
The 12-year veteran point guard has been the Mavericks' starter for the past year and a half, when he's been healthy. He was averaging 13.1 points and 6.9 assists this season.
Coach Rick Carlisle had said that Williams' situation was "pending" when he was not required to be at practice on Thursday. Carlisle said the Mavericks were in the market for help at point guard via a 10-day contract signee, although no names were divulged.
The Mavericks currently have Yogi Ferrell, Devin Harris and the injured J.J. Barea at point guard, although Harris has played mostly shooting guard over the last few seasons.
Williams had just two months remaining on the one-year, $9-million contract he signed last summer. He has said numerous times that he had hoped for a longer-term deal. It's likely he will be pursued by several teams who need to shore up their backcourt to make playoff runs down the stretch.
