Mavericks officially hire Lakers’ assistant Jason Kidd as next head coach

The Dallas Mavericks have officially hired Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd as the franchise’s next head coach.

After former Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle parted ways with the team after 13 seasons shortly after Dallas lost in the first round of the playoffs, Kidd’s name came up briefly as a possible replacement.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, however, wanted to find a general manager first before conducting a search for a head coach.

Talks with Kidd ramped up when Carlisle said Thursday he hoped Kidd would be his replacement, citing how Kidd could form a solid relationship with star Luka Doncic, who has a massive extension looming.

Now, the move has become official, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN:

The Mavericks have its head coach and general manager in place, but the Lakers now have an opening on Frank Vogel’s coaching staff.

Kidd served on Vogel’s staff since 2019, but he’s now on a new journey.

Los Angeles has a busy offseason this summer and finding a new assistant coach just added to the already long list.
