The Mavericks apparently will get the man they wanted all along.
Multiple reports have them making a trade with the Atlanta Hawks in which the Mavericks will get Slovenia's Luka Doncic with the third overall pick in Thursday's NBA draft.
The deal will send the fifth pick, originally the Mavericks and used on Oklahoma point guard Trae Young, to the Hawks, along with a future first-round draft pick. The draft pick has minimal protections, according to a source.
The trade will be made official after both picks are made.
Doncic, a 6-foot-8, 19-year-old guard, has been a professional for three seasons and was MVP of the Euroleague last season.
The Mavericks believe he has the potential to be a cross between Toni Kukoc and Goran Dragic.
How he will fit with Dennis Smith Jr. remains to be seen, but he's considered to be the best overall talent in the draft outside of Deandre Ayton. He could be a solid scorer, assist man and rebounder throughout his career.
