Mavericks guard Seth Curry out at least a week with leg injury

Seth Curry's second season with the Mavericks took an unfortunate turn with Saturday's announcement that the guard is suffering from a stress reaction in his left tibia.

Coach Rick Carlisle said Curry will be held out for a week and be re-evaluated in the days leading up to the regular-season opener on Oct. 18. The team has three exhibitions this week then an off day scheduled for Saturday.

On Sunday, more should be known, Carlisle said.

"My understanding is it's not out of the question," he said when asked if Curry could be available for the regular-season opener. "But I don't know if we can count on it. It'll be next man up. That's where we are.

"He banged it in the Milwaukee game. And then had a little bit of soreness, continued to play and we got him checked out (Friday). He's going to get a lot of treatment and a week from now we'll see where we are."

With Curry sidelined, it is likely that Yogi Ferrell will move in to the starting spot at guard alongside rookie Dennis Smith Jr.

"In today's NBA you got to have a deep roster because of situations like this and also because it's a more fast-paced game," Carlisle said. "We'll be OK. We just got to have other guys that are going to step forward. And hopefully sooner than later, he'll be OK to go."

Curry was one of the Mavericks' best players after entering the starting lineup last season in January. He averaged 12.8 points and shot 42.5 percent from 3-point range.
