Maverick the cat discovered in Renfrewshire having travelled over 250 miles in lorry

A cat has been discovered in the back of a lorry after travelling from England to the Bridge of Weir.

Now the SSPCA are asking for information in helping to reunite the cat with its owners.

The charity revealed they have had a cat come into their care after being discovered in the back of a lorry that travelled from Barnsley, England.

Discovered on June 14, the cat travelled over 250 miles before being discovered, having travelled to North Berwick, Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy, Dundee, Perth, and Glasgow, before finally arriving in Bridge of Weir.

SSPCA centre manager Judy Button told Renfrewshire Live: “The cat is a tabby and white coloured male, who we have named Maverick!

“There’s no way to know which stop he got on the lorry at, he could have come from anywhere.

'Maverick' is said to be "extremely nervous," and is thought to be a house cat, with staff unable to "get close" enough to locate a microchip.

Judy added: “His nervousness leads us to think he is a house cat, but we are unsure as he could have gotten into the lorry while he was exploring as an outdoor cat.

"Either way we are sure someone will be missing him. Thankfully Maverick is now safe at our centre, but we are desperate to find his owner.”

The SSPCA are calling out for anyone to come forward with any information that would lead to the cat being returned to its owner as the haven’t given up hope that they can reunite the cat with its family.

If you have any information that could help this happen, the charity is urging people to contact their confidential animal helpline - 03000 999 999.
