Maurizio Sarri's shock final request ignored by Chelsea board ahead of Juventus switch

Chelsea's board reportedly declined Maurizio Sarri's offer to see out his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Juventus are hoping to finalise the arrival of Chelsea boss Sarri as their new manager in the coming days.

Sarri has emerged as Juventus' first-choice to replace Max Allegri after winning the first trophy of his managerial career with last week's Europa League triumph in Baku.

Sarri has held discussions with Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia on Friday and wanted to know their plans amid the attraction of a return to Italy.

But it has now emerged that Sarri was willing to stay on for another season at Stamford Bridge.

The Times reports Sarri would have seen out his contract as long as the club offered more public backing and bought into his plans.

But the Chelsea board believed it was in the best interest of the club and Sarri if he moved on and declined his offer.

It means he will be heading back to Italy after just one season, landing the top job in Serie A.

Juve, who this term won an eighth successive Serie A title, are confident of tying up a deal which would see Sarri pen a £19million, three-year contract.

Sarri has endured a rocky relationship with Chelsea supporters during his sole season in England, despite European success, a third-place Premier League finish and finishing runners-up in the League Cup.

Mirror Sport revealed last week that Sarri's exit could pave the way for Frank Lampard to return to Stamford Bridge as manager.

A host of names are likely to be considered with the Mail claiming former assistant boss Steve Holland is also in contention.
