Maurizio Sarri pleased with Chelsea response in Europa League win over Malmo after Man City defeat

Maurizio Sarri was pleased with the reaction from his Chelsea players in the wake of their defeat at Manchester City, after beating Malmo FF in the Europa League first knockout round.

Goals from Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud helped the Blues to a 2-1 win in the first leg in Sweden to secure their first away win since December.

It was a timely response from Chelsea after a hapless display in the 6-0 thrashing by the champions Man City, a result which left Sarri in danger of losing his job.

But the Italian coach, having made five changes, was satisfied with the way his side performed after such a devastating defeat.

"We played a good match against a team that is very physical," he told BT Sport.

"We were in control of the match and it would have been nice to win with more goals. But I am happy because we played with confidence and it wasn't easy after the last match.

"We played very well, we conceded a goal on a mistake but the level of attention was very good for 90 minutes. I am happy but we know very well we have to get the qualification in the next match.

Chelsea had controlled the game for the majority of the second half before Anders Christiansen pulled a late goal back after an error from David Luiz.

While the 60-year-old believes his side will qualify, he was cautious not to under-estimate the plucky Swedish outfit.

"I think so, I am always confident," Sarri said when asked about their chances of progression.

"Sometimes we had the wrong approach with matches so we need to be careful."
