Maurizio Sarri has 'no idea' if Chelsea will sign new midfielder in transfer window

Maurizio Sarri has admitted he has "no idea" if Chelsea will sign a replacement for Cesc Fabregas but insists he needs another midfielder to deputise when Jorginho is "in trouble".

Chelsea sanctioned the departure of Fabregas to struggling Ligue 1 club Monaco this week, with the Spaniard signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with Thierry Henry's side.

Fabregas, whose contract at Stamford Bridge was due to expire this summer, decided against staying at Chelsea due to the club's policy of only offering players over the age of 30 a one-year deal.

Chelsea are believed to be looking at Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella and Zenit St Petersburg's Leandro Paredes as potential replacements for Fabregas.

But with the World Cup winner joining Monaco on Friday, Sarri had just one player - Jorginho - able to play in central midfield for the visit of Newcastle on Saturday.

And after admitting Jorginho struggled in Chelsea's 2-1 win over the Magpies, Sarri admitted he desperately needs another midfielder before the close of the January transfer window - but revealed he remains in the dark as to whether he'll land his preferred target.

"Today Jorginho was in trouble and, on the bench, there wasn't a player for that position," Sarri told reporters at Stamford Bridge.

"I need an option for Jorginho."

When then asked if Chelsea are close to signing a replacement for Fabregas, Sarri replied: "I have no idea.

"Not too much (of a worry). The club is worried, I don't know. The club knows very well my opinion.

"I need the player there, it depends on the club decision, I think.

"I cannot do anything more."
