Maurizio Sarri confirms Chelsea's stance over Olivier Giroud's future

Maurizio Sarri has confirmed that Chelsea will be keeping hold of Olivier Giroud this summer despite his contract being up at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has played a second-choice role in the Premier League this season, however has shone in the Europa League, being the competition's top scorer with ten goals.

Before the 4-3 win over Slavia Prague, Giroud stated that he was frustrated at not getting more playing time.

"When the boss gives me a chance to bring something else to the team, I try to give my best and I am fully committed," he said.

"I have been efficient. It has worked up until now so hopefully I will get some more goals to get us to the final.

"Trust me, I am very frustrated when I am not on the pitch but I don’t want to show it.

"I am not happy to play second choice so that’s why I have said next year I will need to have a more important role."

However, Sarri confirmed that the club have decided to take up the option on his contract for another season, with the impending transfer ban making things difficult for the Blues as well this summer.

"He is sure [to stay] because the club has an option for another year, another season," Sarri told Sky Sports News.

"I spoke to the club two days ago and we agreed to exercise the option. So, he will remain."
