Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham must follow Liverpool example and react positively to heartbreak

Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham must use their Champions League heartbreak to drive them back to the final as Liverpool did.

Spurs have defied their critics all season in reaching the final, but fell short against a below-par Liverpool side and were beaten 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday night.

With Liverpool having bounced back from defeat at the hands of Real Madrid last season, Pochettino says they set the example for Spurs to follow and that a first ever Champions League final for the club is only reason for optimism.

“I think we need to feel very proud about the effort how we fight to get to final, we were really unlucky with the penalty,” Pochettino told BT Sport.

“We were alive fighting we played so well, so well second half it is not easy to play against a team who has played a season so well I feel so proud, nothing more to say very unlucky.

“We cry, we feel very proud of the players, our fans and I think the first time to be in Champions League final is about to be optimistic for the future.

“It is about to learn, live the experience and with Liverpool last year were in our position today and now they are in the position that were Real Madrid.

“The standards are so high, that wasn’t enough today that is a bit of a shame when you live this experience you want to repeat and you want to live again... I hope we can repeat in the future.”
