Mauricio Pochettino to Manchester United gathers pace

Manchester United are confident of getting Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent manager.

Paris Saint-Germain are understood to be demanding £10million in compensation for former Tottenham boss Pochettino, who wants to join United straight away.

United paid Ole Gunnar Solskjaer £7.75million in compensation, so the cost of the managerial change would be just shy of £18m, with other United coaching departures expected to accommodate any new staff Pochettino would bring in, reports the MEN.

United have still not made an official approach for Pochettino, who arrives in Manchester today for PSG's penultimate Champions League group stage match against City.

Pochettino's willingness to move to United mid-season is significant as United outlined their intention to appoint an interim manager for the remainder of the campaign before a permanent manager is installed in the summer.

Pressure is likely to mount on the United board to deviate from their plans and attempt to recruit Pochettino now rather than in six months' time, with 26 fixtures remaining in the Premier League, the likelihood of European knockout football and the FA Cup to play for.

Zinedine Zidane's availability provides PSG with an obvious replacement that would strengthen their quest for a first Champions League triumph. Zidane led Real Madrid to three successive Champions Leagues between 2016-18.

Since his second stint as Madrid coach in the summer, Zidane has emerged as a likely replacement for Pochettino as Didier Deschamps is contracted to lead the France national side at next year's World Cup.

United had no intention of moving for Zidane while Solskjaer was in charge as their shortlist consisted of other candidates deemed more suitable to replace the Norwegian.

The club held informal discussions over Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers prior to Solskjaer's sacking but Leicester's form has not improved and the Ajax coach Erik ten Hag is also admired.

Ajax have already begun preparations for the January transfer window and are not expecting an imminent change of coach.
