Mauricio Pochettino sounds warning to Daniel Levy over Tottenham's summer transfer business

Mauricio Pochettino has said that it is "imperative" that Tottenham strengthen their squad this summer, but admitted that Daniel Levy holds control of transfers at the club.

Spurs haven't signed any players in the last two transfer windows, with Lucas Moura the last player to join the club when he signed from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2018.

Although they didn't bring in any new faces last season, the north London club enjoyed a successful campaign which saw them finish in the Premier League's top four and reach the final of the Champions League, where they were beaten by Liverpool .

However, Pochettino has highlighted the importance of new signings this summer and believes that the club is in a good position to make improvements.

"At Manchester City and Liverpool, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are free to decide which players they want and which ones they do not," Pochettino said.

"However, in other teams such as Tottenham , Chelsea or Arsenal the make-up of the squad isn't in the hands of the coaches. Who decides, in our case, is the president [Levy].

"It is imperative that this year we strengthen the team.

"We saved a lot of money in almost two years without signing and that should allow us to strengthen ourselves well."

Tottenham are hoping to end their drought in the coming weeks and have made approaches for Leeds winger Jack Clarke and Lyon's highly-rated midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

Ndombele is reportedly edging closer to a move to north London and Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed the club have rejected a €45 million (£40m) from Spurs.

Aulas also suggested that the asking price could rise to as much as €80 million (£72m) if negotiations drag on.

"If I wait another eight days, it will be €80 million," Aulas told RMC on Thursday.

"Tottenham made us an opening offer worth €45m. Then, we discussed more. Nothing is done, I can assure you. We are not in a hurry either.

"Tanguy has shown his qualities with the French national team. He is one of our best players.

"How much is he worth? I do not know, but not just €45m."
