Mauricio Pochettino sets target for Harry Kane's return over fears striker is out for the season

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has played down the chances of Harry Kane returning to action this campaign - unless the north Londoners go all the way in the Champions League.

Spurs hold a 1-0 lead over Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the competition and would face two more games to reach the final if they overcome Pep Guardiola's side at the Etihad Stadium next week.

Kane left the new Tottenham stadium on crutches after he was injured in the first leg and it is feared that he could be out for the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports News ahead of his pre-match press conference before this weekend's game against Huddersfield Town, Pochettino was asked about how the England international had reacted to the setback and when he could return to action.

"He feels sad and disappointed like everyone at the club," he said. "Of course it is a tough moment for him, tough moment for the team, tough moment for us.

"I was speaking to him before and we need to assess every day to properly answert to see when he can come back to train with the team. At the moment it is impossible to give a date. It is a similar injury to the one he suffered last time against Manchester United."

Spurs are still in the fight to finish in the top four and also saw Dele Alli injured in the win over City.

Pochettino is not expecting to have Kane available for the final games of the Premier League season but could be tempted to bring his talisman back into the fold if Tottenham able to progress past their rivals and the semi-finals to get within 90 minutes of winning the Champions League.

"We have five weeks," he said. "If we are into the final of the Champions League, maybe he will play but we'll see.

"We need to assess him but of course he is not in a great place, which is normal after a few days."
