Mauricio Pochettino's umbrella metaphor and what it could mean for Eric Dier ahead of Leicester

Mauricio Pochettino has refused to drawn upon the quick turnaround his Tottenham side have to make to face Leicester City on Saturday lunchtime after their Champions League clash in Athens on Wednesday.

Spurs returned to Hotspur Way in the early hours of Thursday morning before completing a recovery session after a 3,000 mile round journey.

The Argentinean coach left both Danny Rose and Serge Aurier at home for the trip and made five changes to his starting XI against Olympiacos following comments that he would rotate his team. The squad management certainly seems to suggest Pochettino expects an impact from his sides travels but he is unwilling to lay any blame before his side's match against Brendan Rodger's mean.

Pochettino was asked if the situation was fair and said: “We need to be ready and positive, we can’t change it. I prefer to talk after the game. You should not put up your umbrella before it starts to rain. We need to be positive and not make excuses. Most importing thing is to be positive.”

The Lilywhites will be looking to bounce back after they let a two-goal lead slip in Greece and Pochettino has made it clear that his side must improve their mentality to do so.

The Spurs boss seems set to make a number of changes again in an attempt to avoid 'the rain'.

Premier League 2019/20 - the top teams so far this season

Eric Dier is yet to start a match this season following his recovery from an operation during pre-season and missed out on the squad that faced Arsenal due to a hip issue but has appeared on the bench for every other match this season.

Pochettino suggested his chance could come soon.

The 47-year-old said: "He got injured and of course struggled to be at his best but we can recover and for sure he is another that is going to be have the possibility to play."

Will the England international get his chance against Colchester rather than Leiciester?

"We will see," Pochettino said, "We have Saturday a big game and we need to assess tomorrow [Friday] the whole squad.”
