Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham claim still rings true two years on from Champions League loss

Mauricio Pochettino could be set to return to Tottenham this summer two years after losing the Champions League final to Liverpool, and will likely be tasked with overseeing a squad rebuild, something he warned Daniel Levy about after that fateful game in Madrid.

Spurs are facing a huge summer transfer window, with Harry Kane's future up in the air and a permanent new head coach needing to be sorted before they can make any signings.

Pochettino is believed to be wanted by Tottenham officials, but the former boss will need to resign from Paris Saint-Germain after just six months if he is to earn a move back to N17.

PSG are adamant that they'll keep their manager, but Spurs remain interested in bringing him back to the Premier League.

If he did come back, Pochettino would be forced to oversee a squad overhaul, with numerous players needing to be sold and replacements signed.

That wouldn't be a surprise to the Argentine, however, as he expressed he believed the club needed wholesale changes after losing the Champions League final.

"When you talk about Tottenham, everyone says you have an amazing house but you need to put in the furniture," said a disappointed Pochettino following the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

"If you want to have a lovely house maybe you need better furniture, and it depends on your budget if you are going to spend money.

"We need to be respectful with teams like Manchester City or Liverpool who spend a lot of money.

"We are brave, we are clever, we are creative.

"Now it’s about creating another chapter and to have the clear idea of how we are going to build that new project.

"We need to rebuild. It's going to be painful."

Instead of being given the chance to rebuild Spurs, Pochettino was sacked just months after making those comments, with Jose Mourinho replacing him.

If he were to come back, Pochettino would likely need assurances that he'll be given the freedom to turn things around in north London.
